Meet An Early Leader of New Thought

JAMES ALLEN
1864 -1912

James Allen was a philosophical writer of British nationality, known for his inspirational books and poetry. He was born in 1864 in Leicester, England. After the tragic robbery and murder of his father, James left school to work full-time in several British manufacturing firms to help support the family. He later married Lily L. Allen and became an executive secretary for a large company. At age 38, inspired by the writings of Leo Tolstoy, he retired from employment. Allen, along with his wife and their daughter, Nohra, moved to a small cottage in Ilfracombe, Devon, England to pursue a simple life of contemplation. There he wrote for nine years, producing nineteen great works. He also edited and published a magazine, "The Light of Reason. His first book was “From Poverty To Power.” Allen's second and most famous book, “As A Man Thinketh,” was published in 1902. It is now considered a classic self-help book. Its underlying premise is that noble thoughts make a noble person, while lowly thoughts make a miserable person. Despite its subsequent popularity he was dissatisfied with the work. Even though it was his most concise and eloquent writing, the book that best embodied his thought, he somehow failed to recognize its value. His wife Lily, love the text and persuaded him to publish it. Although little is recorded about his personal life, Lily was the love of his life, and his pillar of strength, she was his inspiration, his friend and partner. Every morning before dawn James Allen would walk up to the Cairn, a stony spot on the hillside overlooking his home and the sea where he would meditate for hours. Then he would return home to write in his journals. Allen's work embodies the influence of Protestant liberalism on the one hand and of Buddhist thought on the other. For example, the Buddha teaches, all that we are is the result of what we have thought. Allen¹s Biblical text says, as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.

Allen's books illustrate the use of the power of thought to increase personal capabilities. Although he never achieved great fame or wealth, his works continue to influence people around the world, including the New Thought movement. His was a gentle genius. He seldom made enough money from his writings to cover expenses. He wrote only when he had a message. He wrote from the heart and he taught us two essential truths: today we are where our thoughts have taken us, and we are the architects - for better or worse - of our futures. Following his death in 1912, his wife Lily continued publishing the magazine under the name, "The Epoch". Copies of As A Man Thinketh are available in our book shop.
